Whether you're chasing a personal best or just love moving your body, real progress isn't only about how hard you train. It's about the whole picture, your training, rest, recovery, nutrition and stress all working together. Your body is a beautifully connected system, and when one part is under strain, the rest feels it too.

1 in 3 male and 1 in 2 female athletes suffer from gastrointestinal (GI) issues, with endurance and ultra-distance competitors experiencing the highest rates.

In this brilliant article, Anna Pugh from CNSlabs explains something so many of us overlook: intense exercise is a form of stress. Push hard without enough recovery and you activate the body's stress response, flooding your system with hormones like cortisol. Over time, this can affect one of your most important assets — your gut.

Here's the fascinating part. Strenuous exercise and chronic stress can weaken the gut barrier, leading to increased intestinal permeability, often called "leaky gut". When that barrier is compromised, food particles can slip through and trigger an immune response, potentially leading to IgG-mediated food sensitivities. And those sensitivities can show up as fatigue, digestive discomfort, low mood and yes, dips in performance.

The exciting takeaway? Research suggests that identifying and removing trigger foods, guided by IgG food sensitivity testing, may meaningfully improve both gut symptoms and sporting performance. It's a powerful reminder that supporting your gut isn't a "nice to have", it could be the very thing that unlocks your potential.

At Empowering Nutrition, this is exactly the kind of work I love. Through IgG food sensitivity testing, I can help you uncover the foods that might be quietly holding you back and just as importantly, guide you through what to do with those results. This isn't only for elite athletes. Whether you're training for a marathon or simply want more energy, better digestion and a clearer head in everyday life, understanding your gut is a powerful place to start. Together we'll turn your test results into a practical, personalised plan so you can feel and perform at your very best.

If you'd love to understand the science in more detail, I can't recommend Anna's full article enough. You can read it in full here.
